The river slides noiselessly toward the sea, as if giving up life to the inevitability of death. The character of any particular painting reflects the mood with which I approach the subject and the intent of expression. Often I have a rather whimsical feeling of the movement before me, but on occasion what strikes me is the utter stillness, as if the landscape were at prayer. In this view I layered colors in thick washes of oil over several months to get a luminous, dark effect that expresses my wonder.
